Too Hot in Your Attic Bedroom? A Four-Step Strategy

An attic bedroom heats up faster than a standard floor apartment due to its proximity to the roof. The air temperature beneath an uninsulated roof can exceed 50°C during summer heatwaves, based on measurements taken in real conditions. This heat then radiates inward, making the room difficult to cool even with night-time ventilation. The most effective approach is to act in order of priority — from the least costly and least disruptive to the most comprehensive.

Step 1 — Address the Roof Windows First

Roof windows (Velux, Fakro, Roto, or equivalent) are the primary entry point for solar heat gain in an attic bedroom. Oriented towards the sky, they receive solar radiation at an angle of incidence that is often near-perpendicular at midday, maximising thermal gains compared to standard vertical windows.

Solar control film for roof windows is the most direct and least invasive intervention. Compatible with existing double-glazed roof windows (depending on the product and manufacturer), it significantly reduces the glazing g-value without altering the visual appearance or operation of the opening. A film with a TSER of 60% blocks more than half of incident solar energy before it passes through the glass.

Check film compatibility with the roof window glazing type (laminated glass, toughened glass, double glazing with warm-edge spacer) to avoid any risk of thermal stress fracture. Solar film manufacturers — including Solar Screen — typically carry out a prior analysis based on the glazing specifications.

This step can be completed in a few hours by a qualified installer, at a limited cost.

Step 2 — Optimise Night-Time Ventilation

Once solar gains have been reduced through the glazing, night-time ventilation can purge the residual heat stored in the walls. The protocol: open windows from around 22:00–23:00, creating a cross-draught if possible, once outdoor temperature drops below indoor temperature.

Close windows early in the morning, before outside heat starts rising again. This cycle works best when solar control film has already limited daytime gains — there is less heat to purge at night, and the thermal mass of the walls (plaster, concrete) cools more readily.

Step 3 — Improve Under-Rafter Insulation

Under-rafter insulation reduces heat transfer by conduction through the roof structure. It limits the amount of heat from the overheated roof that radiates into the room. High thermal resistance materials (mineral wool, cellulose wadding, spray polyurethane) are the most common options.

This intervention is more costly and more disruptive than the first two steps, as it requires access to the rafters and may reduce available ceiling height. It is recommended once the roof windows have already been treated and night-time ventilation is no longer sufficient to maintain an acceptable temperature.

Important note: exterior insulation (sarking) changes the dew point within the wall structure and may affect the conditions for applying film on the interior glazing. If exterior insulation is added, consult the film manufacturer to confirm compatibility.

Step 4 — Consider Targeted Active Cooling

If the first three steps are not enough — particularly in high-sunshine regions or during prolonged heatwaves — a targeted active cooling system (ceiling fan, discreet reversible split unit) can complement the approach. This step consumes energy and involves a higher installation cost, but becomes appropriate in extreme cases.

Before going down this route, verify that roof insulation and glazing treatment have been properly carried out: in most cases, a correctly treated attic bedroom will never reach temperatures that require air conditioning.
