Visual Privacy in Medical Practices: Solutions for Glazed Spaces

Contemporary healthcare centres and medical practices have widely adopted glazed partitions for their architectural qualities: ease of circulation, natural light, and spatial clarity. However, this structural choice raises a specific regulatory requirement: ensuring visual privacy for patients in consultation, treatment and examination rooms. Adhesive window films are now the most effective technical solution to meet this requirement.

A Regulatory Framework with Direct Implications for Practitioners

Privacy obligations in the healthcare sector rest on two complementary frameworks.

Article L1110-4 of the French Public Health Code establishes that all information relating to a patient's health condition is covered by medical confidentiality, regardless of how it is disclosed. This principle applies not only to verbal exchanges, but to any form of visual disclosure: a patient's identity visible from a corridor, or a posture or clinical examination visible through a transparent partition, may constitute a breach of this confidentiality.

Additionally, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, EU Regulation No. 2016/679) classifies health data as sensitive personal data under Article 9. A consultation space directly visible from a waiting room or corridor may be considered a vector for the unintentional disclosure of such data.

Opacifying interior glazing is therefore a proportionate technical response to these obligations — adjustable to the level of privacy required in each space.

Which Film for Which Space?

Adhesive window films come in several technologies with significantly different optical properties. The choice is guided by two main criteria: the level of opacity required and the desired level of light transmission.

Partial Frosted Film

Applied as a horizontal band at eye level (typically between 1 m and 1.80 m), this film blocks direct views while keeping the glazing transparent above and below. It suits circulation areas, corridors and reception desks where a moderate level of discretion is sufficient.

Full Frosted Film

This covers the entire glazed surface. Light transmission levels vary significantly across references. Solar Screen's Discrétion range offers several documented options in the product data sheets:

Reference | Visible Light Transmission | Recommended Use MAT LIGHT PET | 75% | Reception, waiting room MAT WHITE PET | 40% | Standard consultation room MAT OPAL PET | 30% | Specialist consultation, examination

All three films also deliver high UV rejection (according to Solar Screen technical data sheets, Discrétion range), providing additional protection against the degradation of interior finishes. Product warranties vary by reference (see Solar Screen Discrétion range data sheets).

Decorative Patterned Films (Window Graphics)

Patterned films — geometric, botanical or abstract — serve both an aesthetic and a privacy function simultaneously. They are particularly well suited to reception areas and waiting rooms, where full opacity would be disproportionate to the desired ambience.

Static Cling Film (Adhesive-Free)

This variant adheres to glass through static electricity without chemical adhesive. It can be applied and removed without residue, making it well suited for leased spaces or temporary installations. Solar Screen's MAT FROST PVC - STATIC reference falls into this category.

Selection Criteria and Installation

Film selection should take three complementary parameters into account:

  • Viewing distance: some films, such as MAT LIGHT PET, preserve privacy at medium and long range while allowing visibility up close.
  • Glazing compatibility: data sheets specify which glazing types are compatible (single, double, Low-E) for each reference, including cases requiring a thermal stress analysis.
  • Reversibility: PET-based films can be removed later without damaging the glazing, allowing adaptation when spaces are reconfigured.

Installation is carried out indoors by a professional installer. Once applied, the film bonds with the glass over approximately 15 days, per Solar Screen technical specifications.

For an approach combining privacy and aesthetic enhancement of glazed partitions, design films for glazed partitions in professional spaces offer an overview of options applicable in office or healthcare environments.

The full range of frosted and opaque film references is available in the Solar Screen Discrétion range, with downloadable data sheets for each product.
