Installing solar control film on curtain wall façades in commercial buildings raises technical considerations not encountered with standard aluminium or timber-framed glazing. The variety of structural configurations — capped curtain wall, stick system, unitised curtain wall — and the nature of the glazing used (laminated, toughened, screen-printed, with integrated Low-E coating) require thorough technical analysis before any installation decision.

Curtain Wall Glazing Characteristics

Curtain wall façades typically use large-format glazing units (over 2.5 m² per unit) with varying mechanical and thermal properties. The most common types are:

  • Laminated glass: susceptible to thermal gradients due to higher thermal inertia
  • Toughened or toughened-laminated glass: high mechanical strength but sensitive to localised thermal stress
  • Low-E coated glass: metallic deposit on an inner face that can amplify thermal fracture risk when a film is added
  • Screen-printed glass: enamel pattern creating differential thermal absorption zones

Thermal stress fracture is the primary risk to watch for. The film absorbs a portion of solar radiation and transfers this energy to the glass. The edges of the glazing unit — embedded in the structural joint or carrier profile — remain cooler than the exposed central zone, creating a temperature gradient that can cause cracking. This risk increases with large glass areas, existing Low-E coatings, and unground edge defects.

A thermal stress analysis — cross-referencing film characteristics (absorption factor), glazing characteristics (type, thickness, coating), orientation, and solar exposure — must be carried out before every installation. Compatibility with Silicone Joints

Curtain wall façades use structural silicone joints (SSG — Structural Silicone Glazing) or perimeter weatherseal joints. Two key points apply to film installation:

  1. Plasticiser migration: some lower-grade adhesive films contain plasticisers that can interact with silicone sealants, compromising their cohesion or causing discolouration. Solar Screen professional films use adhesives whose compatibility with the main silicone sealants has been verified.

  2. Cutting and edge margins: film installation must leave a 3 to 5 mm clearance from the perimeter weatherseal, to allow free thermal expansion of the film and prevent any adhesive-to-sealant contact. This clearance is essential for the long-term durability of both the film and the weatherproofing.

Managing Dimensional Variation

Adhesive films expand and contract with temperature changes. On large surfaces, this can become visible if the edge clearances specified in manufacturers' technical guidelines are not respected during installation.

Interior application (face 4 on double glazing) should be prioritised for curtain walls: it exposes the film to less extreme temperature swings than the exterior face, while still delivering satisfactory thermal performance. This approach also reduces the risk of premature adhesive degradation.

Glass Manufacturer Recommendations

The major glass manufacturers (Saint-Gobain, AGC, Pilkington-NSG) publish technical recommendations on film installation in their application guides. These documents specify:

  • Which glazing types are compatible, and which should not receive film
  • Maximum allowable film absorption levels by glass type
  • Required waiting periods after glazing installation before film can be applied

These recommendations must be consulted and documented before any installation, particularly on projects covered by a glass manufacturer's warranty — to avoid voiding contractual coverage.
