The rise of remote working has confronted millions of people with a challenge rarely encountered in professional offices: combining a screen-based workstation with one or more windows in direct sunlight. Direct solar exposure at a home workstation creates three measurable problems: glare, localised overheating, and eye strain from luminance contrast. Solar control film offers a tailored technical solution — provided the right specifications are chosen to avoid the opposite problem: a room so dark it undermines wellbeing and productivity.

The Problem: Direct Radiation and Screen Reflections

A standard work monitor (IPS or TN panel) has a maximum luminance of 200 to 350 cd/m². Sun-exposed glazing produces 10,000 to 30,000 cd/m² — a luminance ratio of 1:100. When that source falls within the user's field of vision — through a reflection on the screen or as direct lateral light — it forces the eye into constant re-adaptation, causing visual fatigue.

The instinctive response is to pull down a blind or close the curtains. But this eliminates natural light and shrinks the perceived volume of the room — the so-called "cave effect" — which undermines productivity and wellbeing over a long working day.

The Solution: High-VLT Selective Film

Solar control film does not uniformly reduce all wavelengths of the solar spectrum. Spectrally selective or high-transmission neutral films are engineered to preferentially transmit visible wavelengths (light) while blocking a greater proportion of infrared radiation (heat).

The primary selection criterion for home working is the film's selectivity, defined as the ratio between Visible Light Transmission (VLT) and the overall solar factor (g-value):

  • VLT: ideally 65% or above for home office use, to maintain adequate natural light without needing artificial lighting during the day.
  • Interior reflectance: keep below 10%, to prevent the film surface itself from creating reflections on the screen.
  • g-value: reduce this to cut heat gains, but avoid going below 0.35–0.40 if you want to maintain high VLT.

Ideal selectivity for a home office film is around 2.0 to 2.3 (VLT/g). For example, a film with a VLT of 70% and a g-value of 0.35 delivers a selectivity of 2.0 — reducing solar heat gains by approximately 65% while keeping the room bright.

The Impact of Seasonality and Orientation

The problem peaks in summer and for east- and west-facing windows. A west-facing window receives direct sunlight in the late afternoon, precisely during peak concentration working hours. An east-facing window is exposed early in the morning. North and south-east orientations pose fewer challenges for screen reflections, except around the equinoxes.

Film installation is a permanent intervention: the reduced VLT applies year-round. For rooms with limited natural light in winter, verify that the residual light level after installation remains compatible with visual comfort during the darker months.

Installation and Maintenance

Solar control film is applied to the interior face of the glazing. Its thin profile (typically 40 to 50 µm for Solar Screen solar films) does not alter the building's external appearance. It is compatible with the vast majority of residential double-glazing units, subject to checking compatibility with the glazing type (treatment, dimensions) to rule out any thermal stress fracture risk.
