Climate issues are at the heart of today’s concerns. To tackle the ecological crisis we’re facing, it’s essential to embrace energy sobriety. But what does that really mean? How can a company implement it? And most importantly, how can you reduce your gas or electricity bills by applying energy sobriety principles in your business?
What is energy sobriety?
Energy sobriety is based on a simple principle: saving energy. It’s a set of actions that anyone can implement to reduce their energy consumption. Given the climate crisis affecting the world, it is more necessary than ever to take steps to limit our CO2 emissions. That’s why everyone — individuals and professionals alike — is encouraged to commit to energy sobriety.
The Government's Commitment to Energy Sobriety
As part of the ecological transition, the government has launched an energy sobriety plan. This includes a series of measures and recommendations aimed at making all sectors more energy-efficient.
The plan aims to reduce the country’s energy use by 10% by 2024 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Achieving such results requires collective effort. The plan targets all sectors: transport, retail, public services… It includes 15 key measures to help both individuals and businesses reduce excessive resource consumption.
There is also a platform called “Les entreprises s’engagent” ("Businesses Commit") which guides companies in their energy sobriety efforts and supports them in implementing social actions aligned with this goal.
How to Achieve Energy Sobriety in Your Business
To achieve energy sobriety in a business, several solutions are available. For example, it is recommended to turn off interior and exterior lights in offices, shops, and commercial buildings outside of business hours.
It’s also advised to maintain a general room temperature of 19°C to reduce heating consumption. Other actions such as carpooling to the office or switching to LED lighting are also encouraged.
Energy sobriety can also mean improving the insulation of your business premises. In fact, if a company undertakes work to improve thermal insulation, lighting systems, or heating, it may be eligible for financial assistance such as the CEE incentive.
Another innovative solution to reduce heat loss — without long and costly renovations — is window insulation film. Easy and quick to install, it helps maintain a comfortable indoor temperature throughout the year. For any business, it’s essential to raise awareness among all employees about these simple actions to encourage collective effort.
