As explained in some of our previous articles, there are many benefits to installing window film: heat protection, glare reduction, thermal insulation... However, there may come a time when you want or need to remove your window film — whether it has aged, deteriorated, or you simply want to change the look of your windows.

Is it complicated to remove a window film?

There are several ways to remove window film, and it is possible to do it yourself or contact a professional installer. The process generally involves two main steps: first, removing the film itself, and second, removing the adhesive that remains on the glass.

The difficulty of film removal depends on the type and age of the film installed. Some films peel off easily in one piece, while others may break into small fragments or leave significant adhesive behind. Take care to avoid scratching the glazing or leaving pieces stuck to the surface.

Removing window film can take time, so patience is key. The objective is to remove as much adhesive as possible along with the film. The more glue comes off with the film, the easier the next step will be.

After the film and the majority of the adhesive are removed, it's important to clean the window thoroughly — especially if you plan to apply a new adhesive film. Skipping this step could result in glue residues or dust particles causing air bubbles under the new film.

How to remove a window film from your glazing?

To start, gently peel a corner of the film from the edge of the glass. Try to lift enough material so you can pull the rest slowly. While you may be able to remove some parts by hand, tools will help for a more complete and efficient removal.

One of the most common techniques is to apply heat to loosen the glue and make peeling easier. This can be done using a heat gun, hairdryer, or even a spray bottle with warm water.

Apply the heat near the lifted corner and continue to heat as you peel the film away. Progressively heat and pull until the entire film is removed. Be sure to handle tools safely to avoid burns or damaging the surface.

How do I remove adhesive residues after removing window film?

After removing the film, some adhesive residue may remain on the glass. This step is crucial for a clean result, especially before installing a new film.

Solar Screen offers two dedicated cleaning products — RIGHT-OFF and SPRAY N GONE — specifically designed to eliminate glue residues effectively in just a few minutes.

Alternatively, you can use a glass scraper and soapy water to gently scrape off remaining adhesive. Make sure to avoid using sharp tools that could damage the glass or window frame.
